CONVERGE! is working together with the University of Seville on a novel concept of energy storage based on transcritical CO2 systems and geological storage. The proposed technology takes advantages of the properties of carbon dioxide (CO2) to implement electrical energy storage coupled with geothermal energy extraction and CO2 sequestration in geological formations. CO2 is used as a working fluid that allows storing in geological formations surplus energy from wind or solar sources, while extracting geothermal heat from the reservoirs, and interacting with it to ensure that part of the injected CO2 will become permanently sequestered in the geological formations.
